Since 1973 San Jose Taiko has been mesmerizing audiences with
the powerful, spellbinding and propulsive sounds of Japanese
taiko drums. They merge Japanese, African, Balinese, Latin,
American rock and jazz to produce an innovative contemporary
sound. “A superb, blood-racing exhibition of taiko drumming
San Francisco Chronicle.
Regarded as one of the finest mandolin and fiddle players in acoustic music,
Peter is at his most passionate when he plays Ostroushko—a rich ethnic mix
at the heart of which is his Ukrainian heritage. “Peter Ostroushko can play
anything! And usually does!” Maine Sunday Telegram.
An acoustic guitarist and singer from Genoa, Italy, Beppe brings with him
his poetic vision and mastery of traditional and innovative musical forms.
“…spinning a thick weave that sometimes calls to mind what a duet by
Doc Watson and Leo Kottke might sound like” The Washington Post.
Throughout the 60’s and 70’s there was no one who sounded at all like
Dan Hicks & the Hot Licks. After 35 years, Dan still serves up his
unique fashion, attitude and swagger that are embodied in his outlaw
eccentricity and totally rooted in his songwriting.
“Acoustic swing master Dan Hicks doubles yer pleasure with wry toasted
songs and snappy cool-jazz/folk . . .And those chirpin' backup
chicks - so retro, so hip!” Philadelphia Daily News.
Pure fun!
Hailing from Cuba and residing in British Columbia, this two time Juno
Award winner in 2006 and 2008 crafts a cross-cultural sound that
mirrors his geographical journey. His trademark sugar-cane-sweet melodies,
pop-soul hooks and rock chords subtly subvert commonly held notions of what Cuban music is.
“Love, love, love Alex Cuba. . . made me want to sign up for Salsa lessons, book a trip
to Cuba, and start smoking cigars” JennyLou.
Canadian Fred Eaglesmith’s respect as a songwriter/lyricist
is only matched by his tireless work ethic as a touring
artist. His 18 albums over the last three decades have
consistently evoked critical raves and comparisons to a
broad blue-ribbon list of musical icons from Guy Clark
to Steve Earle to T-Bone Burnett. “In his rough-hewn tunes
about tractors and trains to his delicate, emotional
renderings dealing with lost love, listeners find an
unvarnished beauty in his prose” St. Petersburg Times.
Since 2003, this French Canadian trio has been exploring and
performing time-honored melodies from Quebec’s musical past.
Using fiddle, accordion, harmonica, guitar, and bouzouki, they
blend boundless energy with the unmistakable joie de vivre found
only in traditional Quebec music. “With powerful vocals, driving
rhythms and good humor, this group will do great things to advance
the awareness of Quebecois music far beyond their own borders"
Wheatland Music Festival 2009.
